Viral hepatitis is a family of diseases that cause inflammation of the liver. There are five main types of viral hepatitis: hepatitis A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis A is transmitted through contact with contaminated feces, while hepatitis B and C are transmitted through contact with infected blood, such as sharing syringes or needles, or unprotected sexual intercourse. Hepatitis D occurs only in people who already have hepatitis B, and hepatitis E is transmitted through contaminated water.
Signs and symptoms of viral hepatitis may include fatigue, abdominal pain, nausea, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), dark urine, and light-colored stools. Some people with viral hepatitis may have no signs or symptoms, but they can still transmit the disease to others.
It is important to remember that viral hepatitis can be prevented with adequate hygiene measures, such as washing your hands frequently and avoiding sharing personal objects such as a toothbrush or razor. Additionally, there are vaccines available to prevent hepatitis A and B.
