Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacteria called Treponema pallidum. The disease can be transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person or from mother to fetus during pregnancy.
Signs and symptoms of syphilis may include spots or sores in the genital area or mouth, pain or swelling in the genital area, headache, fever, loss of appetite and tiredness. If left untreated, syphilis can cause serious complications, including damage to the heart, brain and nervous system.
Syphilis prevention includes:
- Use condoms during sexual intercourse
- Avoid sexual relations with people who have syphilis or other sexually transmitted diseases
- Get tested regularly for sexually transmitted diseases
- Practice safe sex and limit the number of sexual partners
- If you suspect you have syphilis or are at risk for the disease, speak to your doctor immediately to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. Early treatment of syphilis can prevent serious complications and help protect sexual and reproductive health.
